The next step to modify the script is achieving a 3D shape for the canopy from the Voronoi pattern. The strategy will be to add normal vectors from the vertices of each cell within a range of height and draw curves using the points at the end of these normal lines as control points. Then applying a mesh patch command and offseting the mesh as a solid we will get the canopy in 3D with certain thickness. Drawing lines in plan using the control points of the cells, scaling them, creating a surface from a planar curve and extruding it as a solid we will get several holes in the canopy to generate different porosity conditions.

These are several plans showing how the current script behaves at the moment. Given a cloud of points that are the center of the tires and selecting a starting point, it draws a line which distance is within a range of a maximum and a minimum that you can choose. Then it checks the distance between the end point of this line and the rest of the points finding the closest one. After, it draws a line from the starting one to the last one mentioned and repeats this process creating several generations. You can slecet the number of generations at the begining. When the trajectory is done it draws a curve from this polyline and then it applies the Voronoi command. It draws curves considering the vertices of each Voronoi cell as control points generating areas that will be used as structural piles of tires. In between them tires will be smashed by the robot following the voronoi lines that separate each cell. Some curves are created in between and divided obtaining more points to apply the Voronoi command again generating a more sofisticated pattern for the surface of the canopy generated above.

This is an option where arises the possibility to design a racing track using melted rubber (which is an actual way of recycling tires) and create a program in its sorroundings protected by columns of tires that could have to do with temporary accomodation for spectators, facilities for the circuit, boxes, steps, housing…

The proposal generates a “masterplan” and “inhabitance cells” within the same logic of construction. By using the Voronoi diagram only as a tool to embody the system, a group of connected isolation bodies is achieved. This structure pretends interdependence and provides the proposal with the advantages of closed and an opened systems articulating different scales. The whole system, each island and the skin, are generated with silightly similar patterns.

The robot that generates the system eats tires underneath creating an empty labyrinth while producing a rubber+nylon+steel canopy on top of it. Sometimes the machine goes back following the same trajectory without producing the surface on top or eating tires.

This is a new trajectory that will go along the surface of a tire cemetery and will collect some tires underneath along its path.

The machine that will generate the shape will be eating and shredding tires from underneath to separate the rubber from the nylon and the steel inside. It will be weaving the nylon and the steel on top of it and dropping melted rubber as well.

The first trial for the shape generated is a rubber worm that changes its width and height according to the movement and dimensions of the robot.

Weaving Nylon and Steel and Melting Rubber

This proposal goes for weaving the nylon and the steel wires that you get out of processing the tires to build a nest structure.  Rubber is also obtained after transforming the tires and is melted to be dropped on top of the nylon and steel structure.

Eating Tire Balls

This proposal consist on machine-balls eating the tires digesting and melting the rubber. When they reach their limit, they die and spread the rubber by layers. So far, the negative space is filled with it generating an ambiguous 3d laberinth.

Tire Cemetery + Trajectory 01

The first step I took to define the scenario and the trajectory was to generate a script able to create several generations of torus at different heights and not only in horizontal planes. The script is also printing the center of each torus to draw a curve through this cloud of points as a first approach for a trajectory.

 

 

 
 

 

Then I decided to generate a “real” tire cemetry considering actual tire shapes to get their centers, radius and orientation to design a trajectory that collects them.
